A disturbing series of antisemitic attacks unfolded across Melbourne between Friday night and early Saturday morning.

The oldest synagogue in Melbourne was deliberately set alight during Shabbat prayers. Additionally, masked protesters stormed a popular Israeli restaurant, throwing chairs and chanting ‘death to the IDF’. A Jewish business was also targeted in an arson and graffiti attack, spray painting “KILL ISRAIEL” on the outside wall.

Thankfully, no lives were lost, but the message was clear, and dangerous. Authorities are treating all incidents as targeted hate crimes. One man has been charged.

This is not protest. It’s intimidation. It’s antisemitism and we know how it ends.
