On this night in 1938, Jewish homes, shops and synagogues across Germany and Austria were destroyed in a wave of state-sanctioned violence.
It marked the moment the world’s silence became unbearable, and the beginning of what would become the Holocaust.
Eighty seven years later, we remember not just the shattered glass, but the shattered lives, families and futures.
We remember because antisemitism did not end in 1945.
We remember because silence is never neutral.
Today is also Remembrance Sunday a day to honour all who have fallen in war, and to reflect on the cost of hatred, intolerance and indifference.
May this day remind us that remembrance is not only about the past, but about how we choose to act today:
to speak out, to show kindness, and to stand against hate in every form.
תְּהֵא נִשְׁמָתָם צְרוּרָה בִּצְרוֹר הַחַיִּים
Tehei nishmatam tzerurah b’tzror ha’chayim – May their souls be bound in the bond of life.
