Welcome to our first entry into The Truth About Judaism on Instagram! As we continue, we’ll unpack the layers of identity, history, and truth behind Jewish identity, but for today, we want to talk about Antisemitism.
As the IHRA definition shows, Modern antisemitism often shows up as hostility toward Israel, going beyond fair criticism of its policies. While it’s okay to critique any government, attacks on Israel often echo old antisemitic ideas or canards:
1. Double Standards: Israel is judged more harshly than other countries in similar situations.
2. Demonisation: It’s portrayed as uniquely evil, with unfair comparisons to Nazis or apartheid.
3. Delegitimisation: Denying Israel’s right to exist or the Jewish people’s right to self-determination.
4. Obsession: There’s an unusual focus on Israel’s actions while ignoring worse problems elsewhere.
5. Erasing Jewish History: Denying the Jewish connection to Israel undermines their identity and history.
In some movements, criticism of Israel becomes a socially acceptable way to hide prejudice against Jews. For example:
Misusing Social Justice: Some groups treat Israel as the ultimate oppressor, sidelining Jewish voices.
Blaming All Jews: Holding all Jews responsible for Israel’s actions crosses into antisemitism.
The line is simple: Critique policies, not existence. Critique actions, not identity. Sources: https://holocaustremembrance.com/resources/working-definition-antisemitism
