The Reality Of Being Jewish In Britain

"It is not safe to be visibly Jewish. I hope that will change. I fear it will not. I love this country. I hope I will be able to stay here."

Those are the words of Harry Richer – a British Jew who loves this country, and who is no longer sure it is safe for people like him.

It is not comfortable reading. It should not be. Two Jewish men murdered on Yom Kippur outside a Manchester synagogue. Four Hatzola ambulances firebombed in Golders Green in the early hours of the morning. A terrorist attack on a North London street in broad daylight. A primary school forced to cancel a field trip because it could not be made safe for Jewish children to be outside together. 61% of British Jews have now considered leaving the country entirely.

Harry usually writes about economics, but in this piece, he writes about something more personal – what it is actually like to be Jewish in Britain in 2026. He is writing because he wants those outside his community to understand what it is living with right now – the fear, the anger, and the love for this country that makes all of it so much harder to bear.
